I recall the day our son was born with such clarity. The anticipation of bringing him into the world was so different from that of our daughter. With Paige, we didn't know what to expect as she was our first. We had all of the equipment you are supposed to have, but other than that we were jumping in head first. With Quinn, we were ready and waiting. We had tried to prepare Paige as much as possible for his arrival, a new addition, a baby brother. She was as excited as a three year old could be which isn't saying alot.
Going back to the clarity part. I have an image burned into the back of my mind, the very first acquaintance of Paige and Quinn. She had spent the previous night with her Grandma and Grandpa as her Dad and I rushed off to the hospital. Quinn was born in the early morning. My Mom and Paige arrived shortly after my Dad, my heart was racing and my eyes brimmed with tears as I waited for my baby girl. What we all knew as one, had just become two.
Paige peered into the room where I sat quietly with our new son. Balloon in hand, she quietly gazed up at me first and then Quinn through her bangs. Slowly a tender yet cautious smile spread across her face and she rushed to meet us clad in her Minnesota Gophers attire (more on that later). She immediately examined his fingers and toes and eagerly asked to undress him so she could see all of his tiny parts.
This was the first time they connected, it was truly amazing how quickly it happened. This was just the beginning...and it didn't take more than a few weeks before he came to watch her every. single. move. Clearly, he thinks she hung the moon....
